Working with OBO (obo.co.nz), a global leader in hockey goalkeeping equipment, Idea applied its design-led engineering process to develop the next generation Carbon Helmet— balancing comfort, protection, and the brand’s distinct character, combining an organic, ergonomic fit with a visually assertive presence on the field.
The project combined advanced CAD development, material research, and prototype testing to validate impact performance and manufacturability across multiple product tiers. Drawing on our extensive manufacturing knowledge, the design process was aligned with production from the outset — ensuring every detail could be efficiently and consistently realised in tooling and moulding.
Through iterative design and collaboration with OBO’s team, Idea engineered new internal foam structures, impact-resistant shell geometries, and a modular cage system that improves both visibility and protection. Extensive FEA simulation and physical impact testing refined the carbon and ABS shell construction, achieving CE certification and setting a new benchmark for field hockey safety.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, 71% of goalkeepers wore OBO gear. By 2028 L.A. Olympics, all OBO-sponsored athletes will compete wearing the new Carbon Helmet — a testament to innovation, collaboration, and the value of engineered design that performs in the real world.
If you’re developing your next product, our integrated design-to-manufacture process can help you achieve the same balance of performance, brand integrity, and production efficiency.
