Our Process - 8 Phases

Idea has developed an easy to follow 3 Staged - 8 Phase process called Design | Development | Supply.

Idea's holistic 3 stages - 8 phases approach to design starts with industrial design research; concept sketches; and mock-up and form study models, to help bring your designs to life.

research phase 1 of idea's design process

Phase 1 | Research

Idea’s 3 stages - 8 phases begins with industrial design research; identifying the aesthetics; ergonomics; user experience; IP and marketing needs of a product.

concept phase 2 of idea's design process

Phase 2 | Concept

Idea’s concept sketch process evolves the product brief into an early visual presentation showcasing aesthetic styling direction; product features; and engineering intent.

formstudy phase 3 of idea's design process

Phase 3 | Form Study

Idea’s designers hand craft form study models to further assist aesthetic and ergonomic resolve of products; literally bringing concepts to life.

mock-up phase 3.1 of idea's design process

Phase 3.1 | Mock-Up

Idea’s mock-up model build techniques provide an early insight to product performance, size/ proportion, and weight/ balance; important factors for early proof of concept.

Idea's design engineers use the latest 3D CAD identify and apply engineering disciplines. Using techniques including ‘design for manufacture’ and ‘performance prototype' samples.

engineering phase 4 of idea's development process

Phase 4 | Engineering

Idea’s design engineers work with the latest in 3D CAD modelling software from Seimens NX capturing complex surfaces and detail, working product assemblies at high-level engineering performance.

prototype phase 5 of idea's development process

Phase 5 | Prototype

Idea specialises in producing prototypes that perform in a variety of production-quality materials and appearance; validating and showcasing the product to the market before tooling investment.

specification phase 6 of idea's development process

Phase 6 | Specification

Idea’s design specifications ensure critical areas of function and appearance are clearly communicated in engineering drawings and through to manufacturing.

Idea's manufacturing and product assembly operates from our Idea-China facility located in Shenzhen China, where we provide customised and profitable manufacturing solutions.

tooling phase 7 of idea's manufacturing supply process

Phase 7 | Tooling

Idea’s NZ design and engineering team provide tool designs with ‘off-tool’ checks, to efficiently manage the tooling process. Our China-based team provides the 'hands-on' assistance ensuring quality and efficient sample supply.

production phase 8 of idea's manufacturing supply process

Phase 8 | Production

Idea’s dedicated manufacturing/sourcing provides the complete supply solution of produced components and assemblied products including; quality audits, 'door-to-door' freight forwarding; importation; and local delivery.

Yes! Idea provides the complete design and development process with an easy to follow 3 Staged - 8 Phase process we call Design | Development | Supply.
No problem! Idea's 3 Staged - 8 Phase process allows us to start (and finish) at any point in the process as you may require.
We are also happy to review your concept or prototype prior to starting and offer suggestions for improvement.
Yes! We offer a specialised prototype service in a variety of production-quality materials that perform like the finished product.
We can of course review your design prior to prototype to suggest any additional design improvements.
Design or engineering changes prior to release for tooling and manufacture are a normal part of our 'design for manufacture' process.
We would be happy to review your design and talk you through likely changes.
Cost will vary from project to project depending on size, complexity and number of development phases required.
We offer a free initial consultation where we can usually estimate and advise the likely costs.
