Project - APIS Solutions

APIS Solutions, provide beekeeping operational management systems that use near real-time sensor data helping commercial beekeepers make informed decisions increasing hive productivity and reducing operational costs.
Their latest product development challenge involved designing serval fit-for-purpose enclosures for sensors monitoring temperature, humidity, hive height, and more housed in rugged, solar-powered units capable of transmitting data via the One NZ Satellite (Starlink) network from remote locations across New Zealand, directly to the beekeeper’s desktop.

Idea's team led the enclosure design and development from research and concept to engineering/prototype, water testing, and production-ready design. Usability was also crucial, as beekeepers wear gloves and protective gear, interface and setup had to be simple, intuitive, and reliable in the field.
Working with APIS’s electronics team and suppliers, we created durable solutions using plastic injection moulding, silicone seals, and stainless steel fabrication, solving weatherproofing, solar integration, and power/data management challenges.
